Tapping Your Core

Tapping Your CoreA few weeks back, I was at a retreat on leadership skills, over in New York State. (It was led by an old professor of mine, and when I reached out to her a few months ago to get back in touch, she recommended I attend.)

It was interesting and transformative.

Anyway, one of the techniques she taught was an exercise called "tapping your core". Its goal was to get us more in touch with whatever it is we turn to when we're at our best -- if you know what I mean.

All of us have a special core strength, even if it's not always obvious.

For example, some folks I know are great at empathizing with other people. It's so instinctive to them, they don't even know they're doing it.

Maybe you're like that?

Perhaps you're the sort of person who often puts herself in someone else's shoes and sees the world through their eyes, without realizing it.

Whatever your core strength is, it's extremely valuable to be in touch with it, especially when you're looking for a job.

For one thing, you can consciously work stories, anecdotes, and evidence into your interview answers to demonstrate that core strength to interviewers.

This does two things:

(1) It enhances your perceived value as a candidate; and

(2) It naturally attracts job opportunities in which you'll most thrive and enjoy authentic fulfillment (since you'd be tapping into your core, every day).

So, what do you turn to when you're at your best?

Think about that.

And find a way to work your core strength into your interview.
