There are, however, still ways where you can take advantage of your current situation. You basically have two options: explore and learn about new skills you might be able to pick up on your current career or start looking for a more interesting job elsewhere where you can have more opportunities for potential career advancement.

Skill Up

Make the most of your current situation by creating a plan to obtain new skills and experiences available at your current organization that will help you in the future. Identify at least three things you can add to your skills. Once you have those new skills, you can work your way towards developing these competencies to your own advantage. Having these additional skills will help you feel more challenged and be prepared for whatever may arise should you need to start looking for a new job.

There are so many ways you can learn new skills. Think about what skills will make you more effective in your current industry. Consider taking a webinar or an online course to learn more about those skills. You can also explore opportunities to learn about new software or technology that your industry is currently using, regardless if they are applicable in your current position or not. These new skills are important to help you enhance your career and make you more marketable should the need to look for a new job arise.

Consider Making a Move

If a promotion is not available, consider a lateral move. Discuss with your HR Manager or your boss the idea of taking on a different role in your present organization. Discuss your long-term goal and your desire to be transferred to a different role with more opportunities for advancement. If their response is not satisfying, then it’s time to consider plan B and look for a job elsewhere.

Your new job might not be something higher than your previous one – taking on a new role similar to what you have is fine. What matters is that the new job will give you a better future – in the form of more potential career path advancement or new skills you will acquire.

Be strategic – do not just tread water Focus on jobs that will help you achieve what you want professionally, the specific skill you want to have and how to best demonstrate them. Experiment with your options – determine what certain skills you can pick up somewhere while deciding on your next move. You can take classes, volunteer work, or online programs.

Whatever works depend on how you face the challenge. Take the proactive approach – never wait for the moment when at work becomes intolerable that you will take every means to escape it. Start exploring as early as possible – both within your organization and outside it.
