Basically, I was a glorified data entry person.<\/p>\n<p>I held this less-than-exciting job\u2014actually, was trapped in it\u2014for quite a long time.<\/p>\n<p>Day after day of entering boring data into spreadsheets. And, they were long days for low pay.<\/p>\n<p>The worst of which, were days when I literally had no work to do\u2026 and yet\u2026 I just had to sit and wait until the boss checked on me and finally gave me permission to go home.<\/p>\n<p>But what could I do? Every time I went to an interview for a new job\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold; text-align: center;\">I Would Trip Myself Up In <br> New And Embarrassing Ways!<\/p>\n<p>It was like I had a superpower\u2026 a really bad superpower!<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, as unsatisfying as this job was, I stayed, because I couldn\u2019t \u201ccrack the code\u201d of successful job interviewing\u2026 and\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold; text-align: center;\">I Was Scared Of Having <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">No Job<\/span>!<\/p>\n<p>But during this time of being a spreadsheet \u201cjockey\u201d and really screwing up every job interview went to, I had what I like to call my\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Major Life Turning Point #1:<\/span> The Most Humiliating Job Interview Of My Life!<\/p>\n<p>As luck would have it, a family friend got me invited to an interview for an amazing position as a Management Consultant with a top-tier firm.<\/p>\n<p>And because of the unsatisfying experience of my current job, just imagining what this new job could do for my life, had me excited.<\/p>\n<p>A little too excited, as it turned out!<\/p>\n<p>You see, even though it was a cold and windy day in February, I was so excited, I was a little worried about sweating through my crisply-pressed, white dress shirt.<\/p>\n<p>And when I finally sat down to do the interview, I felt so nervous and full of self-doubt, it was literally eating away at my stomach. But whatever the case, I was there and once the interview began, the interviewer started to scribble notes furiously while I answered the first few questions.<\/p>\n<p>And then it happened. Maybe seven minutes in\u2014as I was struggling through yet another answer\u2014the interviewer dropped his pen on the desk, looked me in the eye, and said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold; text-align: center;\"><i>\u201cAlan, That Won\u2019t Work.<br> Try It Again!\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d lived through this experience before, and I knew right then and there it was \u201cgame over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My face turned red, my vision blurred a little and my voice started shaking. All I wanted to do was just slink out the door.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, the interviewer didn\u2019t let me escape. Instead, for the rest of the interview, he tore apart my answers\u2026 calling me out for tired, cookie-cutter B.S., poking at every mistake I made... and\u2026 trying to squeeze out just one decent response from me\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold; text-align: center;\">By The Time The Interview Ended\u2026 I Felt <br> Embarrassed, Shaken Up, And Miserable!<\/p>\n<p>But even though that interviewer was \u201chard as nails,\u201d and the experience was very unpleasant, to this day I\u2019m actually thankful that he took the time to shake me up, help me realize my weaknesses\u2026 and\u2026 help me become better (if only slightly).<\/p>\n<p>That was my Major Life Turning Point #1. Next is my\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Major Life Turning Point #2: <\/span>Confident And Cocky, I Botched An Interview That Should\u2019ve Been A Walk In The Park!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A little while later, after I finally recovered from that unsettling interview experience, my\u2014aforementioned\u2014academic \u201cnerd\u201d side came out and I decided to further my education.<\/p>\n<p>I figured that was the answer (and it was in a roundabout way)\u2026 and\u2026 I wanted to go BIG! So, I decided the thing to do would be to apply for the MBA program at Yale University.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t easy, of course, but I got in!<\/p>\n<p>While studying for my MBA, I decided to go to an interview just to sharpen my \u201cskills\u201d. Now, this should\u2019ve been easy. Why? It\u2019s simple.<\/p>\n<p>This was basically a \u201cpractice interview\u201d for essentially the same job I had held for the last three years.<\/p>\n<p>BUT\u2026 not so fast!<\/p>\n<p>It was not a walk in the park! You see, even though I knew the material cold and had actually done the job on a day-to-day basis for a long time\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold; text-align: center;\">I Still Had A Really Hard <br> Time With The Interview!<\/p>\n<p>The first couple of questions, I was confident and kind of cocky and just floating through it\u2026 and then\u2026 the interviewer asked a couple more questions that were worded in a funny way.<\/p>\n<p>I stumbled and stuttered a bit\u2026 and finally\u2026 like many, many times before, I just kind of fell apart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold; text-align: center;\">Silently, To Myself, I Just Said\u2026 <br> \u201cDAMN IT!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just like in previous interviews, it was awkward, embarrassing and humiliating!
