Interview Questions: What Made You Pursue Physical Therapy?

2 min read · By admin · March 3, 2016

Interview Physical TherapyPhysical Therapy is one of the many important professions in the health care sector. This occupation may involve providing treatment and care to people with physical injuries or illnesses to regain their range of movement and control the pain. Often physical therapists help people who have lost their motor functions due to accidents, illness, or age. It’s a tough job, and you might be asked by an interviewer why you chose this line of work.

Of course, you’ll need to prepare an answer for this – but how? Here are some tips to point you in the right direction.

1. Take time to analyze.

Think hard about what made you decide to take up physical therapy. Ask yourself, “Why physical therapy, of all occupations?” It could be a combination of the following reasons:

    • Personal experiences. (Example: You were impressed by the way your grandmother or other relative was taken care of by a physical therapist.)
    • Passion for caring. (Example: You can mention how caring for other people is your passion and how much you are willing to do it to make them feel better.)
    • Practicality. (Example: You can explain that there is a need for physical therapists and it’s a great field to get involved with. There’s nothing wrong with being honest, as long as you don’t give the impression that you’re self-centered.)

2. Provide examples.

You can provide a more complete response if you provide examples. Share stories related to physical therapy, and state the reason why it became your choice. Emphasize the examples that made you love the profession in the first place.

3. Dig deeper.

Keep it real, and don’t be shallow. Don’t say things just for the sake of answering the interviewer. This is a personal question, so it’s okay for you to say what you think and feel. Dig into your core. Your heart will always tell you why you chose something.

Talking about what motivated you to pursue a particular career is not difficult if you approach it with sincerity. You just have to be true to yourself so you can provide a genuine and heartfelt answer. After all, what’s wrong with telling the truth if you have good intentions?
