4 Avoidable Errors Job Seekers Should DodgeIncrease your chances of getting employed by avoiding these common job-seeking mistakes.

Job seekers often feel frustrated when they don’t get the call they’re expecting. If this is happening to you, it’s probably time to rethink your job-seeking strategies.

Here are some job-seeking errors you can avoid:

Carelessness

You need to be focused when it comes to looking for a job. Pay attention, down to the last detail. Check your resume for grammatical or spelling errors. If you need a fresh set of eyes, ask a friend or mentor to check it for you. They can also tweak your resume if it needs a little improvement.

If you are called for an interview, you have to be mindful of what you say. Of course, this doesn’t mean you should be a robot while you answer their questions. Pay attention to questions so you can get your point across effectively. Don’t rush. (After all, this is your career we’re talking about.)

Make sure to personalize your cover letter and resume as well (the extent depends on the company you are applying for). Don’t just create a generic resume to send out for different positions you’re interested in.

Lack of Research

Don’t hit the Apply button online without knowing what you’re getting into. Know the responsibilities of the position you’re interested in and evaluate if you meet the requirements.(You wouldn’t want to waste time on something if you know you are not qualified for the position.)

Not Convincing Enough

Consider how to convince your potential employer why he or she needs to hire you. What can you do for the company? Will they actually benefit once you’re hired? Show your value and worth by highlighting the skills you have that can be beneficial for the company. Match your skillset and see how it meets their demands.

Talk about your achievements during the interview. Perhaps you’ve solved a problem or secured a deal that’s been really important for a company you’ve worked for. Whatever you’re good at, show the employer that you’re worth hiring because of what you can do for the company.

Lack of Common Courtesy and Manners

Make sure to always show your best manners whenever you meet someone from the company you seek to join. Recognize every act of kindness within the company. In addition, refrain from taking calls inside the building; if you need to pick up the phone, and you’re in the lobby, take the call outside.

As a reminder, no matter what the stage of your job search, it’s important to stay positive whenever you’re looking for a job in order to keep your mind open to whatever opportunities may come your way.
