Sometimes interviewers, recruiters, HR reps, and hiring managers don’t call you back — even when they promised they would.
When this happens, it’s normal for you to follow up and check the status of your application. But it is important not to sound so needy to avoid ruining your chances of getting hired.
Here’s my 3-step secret to following up without looking desperate:
First, at the end of the interview itself, ask when you can expect to hear back from them with an update on the process. Tell them you look forward to it.
Second, always send a “thank you” note within 24 hours after the interview. Keep it short and sweet. Nothing fancy. Again, tell them that you look forward to hearing from them soon.
Now, for the third step, do this either the day after you were supposed to hear back from them or one and half weeks after the interview — whichever one comes around first.
Never do this on a Monday.
All you need to do is send them a simple two-line email.
You’re not reminding them about their promise or accusing anyone of ignoring you. All you do is ask if there’s anything else they need from you.
That’s my simple 3-step secret to following up like a star candidate.
Notice three things:
(1) There isn’t the slightest hint of desperation or neediness.
(2) You’re not pressuring anyone or introducing negativity.
(3) You’re being pleasantly persistent.
Next time you need to follow up, that’s how you do it.
